He is probably Aromantic but does have feelings, like '' feeling protecitve '' towards someone. That counts ! _ also due to their backgrounds, both MC and ML are emotionnally numb , imo both aren't all about '' sunshines and rainbows '' MC is depressed and so he suffers from a lack of ability to feel joy or even sadness.
In that sense the ML is truly caring for MC he is really trying and truly and sincerely enjoy seeing the MC enjoying the little things in life. This might come from different motives (just wanting to have him battle-ready is an example of motives) but it seems to me the ML truly enjoys spoiling him and getting to know him in every way possible. (He looks delighted when MC lights up and is finally answering about activities he would truly enjoy.)
(Remember that MC didn't even find it sad when he thought 'oh maybe I am dying' and MC wasn't afraid to die neither.) The MC is driven by fear and at the very least he is able to find his true calling and great motivation for life thanks to ML also thanks to him he is introduced in a team of close-knitted people that welcome him whole-heartidely so, I get it , I think it is not your usual '' lovey-dovey '' romance but I find that refreshing!
I like it when the relationship is oscillating between codependency and interdepency I mean they need each other and the MC seems fierce enough to brace for himself when the ML goes overboard. I think this couple or whatever you want to call is '' quite healthy '' in the sense lvery healing to MC and maybe to ML as well.
I feel the ML is learning about love / caring for someone he truly wants to help and truly cares about. My gut feelings tell me ML might have a bit of a anti-social personnality or brain but still he is caring to his peers and subordinates he doesn't seem to be dangerous for the MC or anyone. It seems to me that he is just dangerous to his ennemies? I wonder what about sex and romance, you know ? It's only the beginning but there are other types of love stories than romance. It's possible to get attached and care deeply for a sex partner. And truly liking being with them, and wanting to be long term partners for common projects too!
