It not only ruins whatever plot you have moving forward but simultaneously negates your character's motivations and the whole backstory! This women was given a sign of imperial authority that actually has REAL power attached to it! And it was given to her when she is not related in any way to the emperor that would give him control over her. She is in fact married to the emperor's political opponent. He has to be the opponent because anyone who publicly declares that they will make their mistress the empress is committing TREASON! Furthermore the emperor then went and married the man off to someone that wasn't the mistress. The fl has to the emperors political ally to be given that ring. She is married to this man to prevent him from gaining political allies that can oppose the emperor. Furthermore the emperor is off on the BATTLEFIELD right now while his political opponent is sitting in the capital! This women's number 1 goal right now should be to actively gaurd against any coup her husband could be planning!
