Sadly, I think it's so common in BLs that some authors feel obligated to put it in there--or they like it but don't really know how to integrate it (not that there's a "right" way to integrate SA, per se). But yeah, it doesn't really do anything. The story is interesting in concept, but it's dragging due to a "love" triangle where the other fox isn't really doing anything besides abusing the fox ML.
