I think it's probably parasites aliens like supernatural phenomena and the dude is a researcher like how old cultural tales are tied to actual monsters but people don't see the monsters so they become folk tales. Also it seems like both the girl and the guy started seeing things when they tried to let go of thoughts and convention and focus on reality. Can't wait to see how it goes
