Remember the vial that Thalia saw her maid get from a priest? If I remember correctly the liquid inside attracts monsters. So once the maid dumped the contents of it at the camp - monsters attacked. Thalia got injured, her whole leg/knee got mangled. She's constantly in pain. Barkas could've helped her but because of his oath her had to help the first princess instead.
