Tbh, I was pretty disappointed with this story. It had a really great baseline and even an interesting supernatural theme that was kind of just thrown away. Nick just sort of makes demands and puts out what he wants and Owen always complies with them, even if they at first made him uncomfortable. Like, Owen’s insecurities about bonding and being a monster could’ve definitely opened up to something bigger that would tie up the abruptness of him and Nick’s relationship. It would make the plot much deeper and increase the emotional aspect of Nick and Owen’s relationship as well as give a reason for their intense love. Instead, Owen just sort of abandons his fears of hurting Nick when he thinks that Nick is cheating, and because he wants to prevent Nick from leaving him, he throws everything out the window and says he’ll have his baby and bond with him. There’s surface level tackling of Owen’s insecurities and Nick is honestly a very selfish person. Instead of saying, “I don’t want you to feel like you have to do this to appease me because you think I was cheating, I want you to do it because you want to with me.” He kind of just becomes happy that Owen was so insecure he laid down his boundaries so that Nick wouldn’t leave him. Nick also just does whatever he wants the whole time and I get that he’s the unthinking “Neanderthal” but the writing keeps trying to feign as if he’s always thinking of Owen for Owen’s sake, when in reality Nick is thinking of things Owen could do for Nick’s sake. The part I hated the most though is the lack of justice or even care for the tortured and drugged omegas, instead it focused more on Owen who wasn’t as badly affected or murdered. It made me feel kind of disgusted in the way the story kind of treated these characters as just stepping stones for Owen’s climax where he’s kidnapped by Locke. And, in the end, they blew up the building and “buried everything with it” so that nobody would know, meaning that none of those omegas got justice at all. It just left a bad taste in my mouth.
