I’ve finally gotten back to reading EC after what…. 4 years? I decided to read flashback -> start of the story -> post-flashback and honestly I think it’s a great way to read it. I’m not saying it *should* but I know how frustrated I get with long flashbacks so I decided to go “in order”. Honestly, I don’t get the criticisms reading it this way. I definitely definitely think this is a binge read, a lot of the problems I saw in previous comments I feel like could be explained as we see the characters progress all at once. I can understand how ppl’s perception of the characters can change week by week instead too.
Like Mother dragon isn’t going to step in because her duty is done, the “dirty residue” is no more. To her Sol and Lokran are humans. She won’t touch them.
There’s a lot of criticisms with the ML’s behavior but it totally makes sense with how the story played out. He values Brian/Ian’s will over anything else. He cares for him so much but Brian/Ian’s personality, in the end, will prioritize others over himself. That’s what we come to realize in the flashback. If Brian/ian’s will is others, so will Sol’s. The difference between him and Lorkan is that simple. He will always always let Brain/Ian do what he wants, but Lorkan wants him to do what he wants. He’s snarky and playful in the beginning because he doesn’t know for sure it’s “his” Ian/Brian. He doesn’t act that way anymore because things are more serious, he finally has his person back. God forbid he wants him back after everything, and to keep him safe after the man who killed Brian is the same person he’s running back too. He lacks understanding of Brian/Ian’s soul because he’s never encountered anything like it. He’s still learning to adapt with it and HE DOES. He still lets Ian do what he wants in the end, I don’t know how people think he’s any different now. It’s why they are having this valid miscommunication! Because he saw how much Brian’s influence hurt Ian and that he has his own life now, Sol doesn’t want to disrupt it for the past even if it makes things easier, because in the end, he wants Ian to decide this life, not Brian. It would be niceeee but Ian isn’t doing himself any favors too. Even when he lets Ian do dangerous thing, he’s because of trust. He knows how dangerous it is but he trusts his man god forbid
Ian’s personality is interesting too. Reading it the way that I did, I got to see Brian first, then Ian. It was honestly a bit frustrating seeing Ian’s behavior after reading the flashback because fuck that yellow hair piece of shit, but I get it. His world is dark and gray and he’s always on edge. He loosens up once he’s with his man. Debate all you want but in the end Brian is Ian and Ian is Brian, it makes sense for their personalities to slowly converge. He’s still his own person of course and I still see his personality peak through with his constant internal dilemmas, but we can’t expect his personality to stay the same when everything around him is changing and he’s learning the truth, he’s not going to stay the same.
