The author makes us feel the character's emotions in such a painstaking manner, that in the years that I have been reading second to only killing stalking I have been made to truly feel the hopelessness of an abusive relationship.
Fostering the thought that his decision to stick with a "sure" ticket to freedom or rather survival is worth putting up with for a few more months despite the clear warning signs, despite the obvious manipulation, and despite treating our poor mc as an object.
It is scary to think that this is someones reality and even scarier to think that the author made me consider it a "better option to stay". Speaks volumes to how terrifying abuse can get and how manipulation can make scary situations seem rational.
