I feel like it would have been better to announce that Mode died in childbirth and the child was stillborn and exile Alexis, Mode, and the child instead of killing Alexis and confining Mode. I know this end for them is more “real,” but I felt it was unnecessary.

You are naive. It's a heavy crime to deceive and insult the royal family especially an issue as sensitive as heir to the throne a.k.a the emperor's child.
If it would just end in exile in the end, that would be too light of sentence for their crime.
At least the child was loved since she is innocent.

I hate that everyone around Erna and Bjorn are disregarding Erna’s feelings. Just because Bjorn seems to regret, or he looks a little sad, they are pushing him forward to get Erna back. What about Erna? What about her feelings?
