I actually think it's really realistic. He is scared and doesn't want to face the end of their relationship so denying himself to talk with Dio is the best chance to actually string out their fate. He doesn't see a chance that this will work out, and I can kind of see why he's thinking that.
I would stay out of spite for that woman. Taking my child and than threatening me? Now you woke up your biggest enemy. I hope he‘s gonna push back or at least not take her threatening too serious, because who is she to do that.
