He did not understand human emotions, that's why he had a fight with potato
When one of the twin baby comes to him before he was probably thinking about whatever happened.... So when he picked up the child and talked to him about how his papa (his beloved potato) will be worried of not finding him beside him , the child mimiced him saying papa that' probably filled him up with emotions cuz even generally baby's first couple of words he learns are precious and him being able to say papa just after the serpant saying it filled the serpant with emotions cuz the baby was able to finally refer to his beloved potato as papa
