Originally, Muni was one soul and body. When he was in that coma on his deathbed, Il-In fell in love with him/became infatuated with basically his body, his vessel.
During the first ritual, they separated Muni from his body (basically extracted his soul and transferred it into the bookmark). Then Muni’s body underwent the second ritual with the serpent… so Giyun is Muni’s body. That’s why the shaman ahjumma said he was incomplete because his body, his vessel does not have a soul. It’s also the reason why all those different souls/versions of Muni are inhabiting Giyun’s body. That’s how I understand it. He’s a gate for ghosts hence the title name hahaha
