So I've been lurking here for a long long time and this is my first question it's kinda manga unrelated and political? but here goes nothing : so I used to live in an African country and recently me (black skin) and my friend (white skin) moved to the u.s.a . We didn't have a lot of language problems cuz we learned american English watching movies and reading books but mainly consuming american media .so Saturday night , we had a few friends over( we were all either vaccinated for precaution or tested negative a short while back) and as we were talking my friend who has lived all her life in Africa and is of white skin said 'y'all' in a sentence and a friend called her out saying she can't use it cuz she's white , i haven't been called out for it and I also haven't been called out for speaking jokingly in medieval English lingo as a joke . What do you guys think , can I use black lingo ? Medieval English? What can my friend use?
You can use whatever lingo you want bubs. Sometimes when people use AAVE it’s looked down upon (usually when it’s used in a mocking way) but other then that it’s fine. Maybe your friends should check their white savior complex lmfao. And “y’all” is used by literally every ethnicity and nationality. It’s probably one of the dumbest slangs to gatekeep.
Dialect is usually picked up based on where you were raised/live. With you guys living in the USA it’s inevitable that you would say “y’all”. Everyone says it. Idk. They’re opinion is weird, but basically, you and your friend have nothing to worry about.

Not sure, I'm brown and use "y'*ll". If it's racist, ng use it anymore.

I use y’all it’s not racist as far as I know but it’s not a slur of any kind just literally the abbreviation of you all
