Himmel was in love with frieren this entire time but was waiting for her to realize it as well. She didn’t realize she loved him until after he passed away hence the one manga scene where (spoiler) she traveled back to the past because of a tomb stone and fought a demon that makes you fall under an illusion that makes you happy.
