Maybe he was always looking forward to sleeping and playing in his dream that he never lived in the present moment so his life turned out mediocre. He never valued people he met in real life so he turned out alone, he didn't put too much effort in his career because he was so caught up with wanting to always be in his dream which he thinks is his refuge.
