It’s a bit of both. At first he only wanted luck, then he realized that Tae was really genuine and fell in love with him. However, the reason he kept going after Tay was also because he hated losing to Ilay. It’s true that he did loved Tay for his genuine kindness, but that desperation he had of chasing Tae stemmed from possession and the fear of losing to Ilay. This is also mentioned in Passion Raga.

I’d put this off for years despite its high rating, especially after finding myself disappointed with the artist’s other work . I finally gave it a chance today and OMG, this absolutely deserves a historical drama adaptation.
Silly me for depriving myself of this masterpiece for years, otherwise I could’ve reread it a hundred times by now and relived every moment again and again, so tender yet so brutal, what a beautiful reading experience . Why don’t they make GL stories like this or Opium anymore?
