the novel is still ongoing so no ending yet! there's a lot of pain and angst throughout. the novel takes time to show certain events through both Thalia's and Barkas' eyes so we get to see both sides. And I can't spoil the happy parts cause... there's not many happy moments? something bad will happen soon, then something neutral and then we're plunged into a rollercoaster with tiny highs and devastating lows. a lot of stuff starts making sense once we get to see Barkas' side tho!
well the happiest thing about this whole story is probably the fact that Thalia and Barkas will get married very soon? but what got them to that point is not very happy... then she gets pregnant with him and it seems like things might be getting better but then she has a miscarriage and they distance themselves. after that the story gets even sadder. Thalia gets a pet monster wolf that she believes is a reincarnation of their child but after a while Barkas is forced to "kill it" since it started attacking people, including his brother. When it finally seems like Barkas might start taking his head out of his ass Thalia dies shortly before he returns to the castle. when we finally find out why Barkas is so obedient to the twins he's already so broken by her death and the journals she left that he just lets the wolf that he "killed" maul him and he also dies. but hey at least he goes back in time with his current memories BUT he's that wolf and he (and we) gets to see everything that happened to Thalia during his absence in the estate from that animal's POV. and that's what's basically going on rn with the story. A lot happened so I only mentioned the most important things in my opinion.

So, if Varkas is now the wolf, then eventually they have to die again and be reincarnated again for a fresh start or to right all the wrongs?

We don't know exactly but most theories believe so.
