oh how i hope they dont follow the novel and do the banquet scene....
After having ignored maxi for god knows how long, theres a banquet where she wears a revealing dress and dances with another man in front of riftan to make him jealous and to get his attention bc the man is literally stonewalling her hardcore- well this result in him dragging her into a room where he roughly has sex with her, and he keeps her confined with him in this room for, get ready-
A WHOLE WEEK
where he continuously as very rough sex with her, so a point where she's crying and pleading with him and he's like 'isn't this what you wanted?'
it's sad and it's disgusting, and there's never an apology from him nor an acknowledgement of wrong doing ...
I'm confused if you read novel or just you got this from spoilers. The banquet scene was a fight between them that allowed them to open up, sex was consensual and not different from their usual "roughness"
And maxi wasn't confined she was just tired af. When her friends were worried they haven't seen her for a week and snuck in she was just like oh? What are u guys doing here? She was chilling
Well, there's a moment where her friend mentions how worried she was for Maxi because she assumed Riftan was holding her against her will, which made Maxi sort of question what Riftan did to her before the scene glosses over the issue entirely. Clearly, the author knew how messed up the scene was. Otherwise, she wouldn't have included a scene where Maxi questions if what Riftan did was okay.
Maxi left the room leaving a note, she had no guards forcing her to stay, she was not chained down. Not choosing to leave is still a choice. And I do agree it was semi confinement by withholding info or telling her she doesn't need to leave. But when she did leave when he was not there, maxi wasn't running away, she didn't not even think he might think she's leaving, when she met him on the docks she was casual, and riftan was not angry at her autonomy but desperate to not be separated. I do agree it actually toxic and glossed over later, but I do understand he's a broken man, it's a shame he's never scolded or admonished for it by maxi herself not side characters. But saying she wanted to stop or that it is rape is a bit I've rape line.
I'd consider a scene rape when the preperator knows she's unwilling and still continues, is selfaware of his transgression, takes pleasure in overpowering her or precisely the pleasure in stripping her of her autonomy, or there is clear disregard to her words.
And on victim part if she considers it rape, she truly wants it to end not simply pause, she feels actual pain, she attempts to leave but is stopped with force not lie, she sleeps with someone while thinking its someone else, she didn't consent to certain elements such as exhibitionism or being recorded. Bodily harm. Citing power imbalanced terms to force compliance.
One or two is enough to make it rape, but I'll reread the novel part to look for such elements (〜 ̄△ ̄)〜
Riftan is emotionally abusive
Also in what world do you slam your first and yell at a person you just found out has been horribly abused since they were eight?
idc i said what i said
Someone's actually making sense here. I can't believe so many readers are more quick to rush to Riftan's defense when he continuously displays abusive behavior patterns, yet, with Maxi, it's as if the girl isn't allowed to fumble and cry under pressure and overwhelm. I smell hypocrisy.
Or maybe it's misogyny. Eh, I think it's both.

maybe he's double, doubling them- so he's fooling teach and the hounds, but is actually against guwon ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
do i even make sense
