In the manhwa it's a bit more ambiguous who's doing all the thinking and as a result it might look like hoyeol is basically a soul being dragged around. In the novel he basically is the one to guide grandfell towards this and that while GF just does some bullshit while hoyeol is busy scheming for their next battle or smth
Yes, Hoyeol novel version is different from the manhwa version. The storylines got very messed up in the season 2, they keep adding unnecessary stuff for some reason
