Juneteenth is a holiday to celebrate the LAST SLAVES TO BE FREE. Many people may not think it should matter. You probably not met a American, cuz racism is drilled issue since the beginning of the founding of the USA. Also talking about cowboys. The author has to understand. COWBOY ARE NOT ALL WHITE. Remember HOLLYWOOD WAS AND STILL IS RASIST. movies with cowboy are white due to the actors all being white. Charlie brown. Remember the only black character. He was added after the creator fought for him to be part of kids. If you seen the thanksgiving episode, he sat away from the other children. This was the compromise the executives allowed for the creator Charlie Brown to keep this black character.
back to cowboy. Cowboy were Mostly LATINOS AND BLACKS 25% OF THE POPULATION. Also, there ranchers. Cowboy in the wild west is a stereo type from Hollywood movies. NOT HISTORICALLY ACCURATE! The cowboy hats and boots, LATINOS! Mexico was taken by the spanish. Why is this important. BECAUSE PARTS OF THE WEST WAS MEXICO, BEFORE BEING STOLEN. Cowboy, help get the cattle of cows during the golden era. For the blacks cowboys. FORMER SLAVES! many black people escape to places like Kansas and build a community with the reachers in the state. Becoming ones themselves. So yes, the author needs a better understanding of US history. Yes but also COWBOY HISTORY!
I like to add I'm not an expert. I just remember this from American history in high school. Loved my teacher as she taught further than the typical retelling of US history. Cowboy culture was something I wasn't expecting but learning the aftermath of the civil war was interesting. Next to the wars that happened after. Remember people what's happening in the US isn't the first time. It happened before but without a war to start it. Also I'm a defendant of Mexican ranchers. So yea.

I'm only pointing at the Juneteenth part. Yes and no. Those who are more rounded in black culture or descendants of former black slaves, knew of its existence but not as a holiday but a day to remember. Also I was pointing out this fact due to history class explaining key dates of history. That being June 19. (Which now not a Americans holiday?) I know it's not a international holiday but one of the United States. Still it's a important day that became significant due to years after slavery ended.
The setting after the civil war which is already a scary territory for a story. That not trying to be historic but is by the setting and theme. Write about a historic setting and time except to be judged farther then your characters. I was excited for the story and was saddened over the fact it's a slave master x cowboy. The pure setting of it after the war made it become a target to ridicule.

I read this years ago during its run. All I'm gonna say is I thought it was reversed grooming (obsessed kid with the adult figure forcing a romance. To then said adult faltering to accepting.
