I was dissatisfied with the ending. I think it may have been rushed, but it’s not the worse ending ever. I just don’t like how literally the chapter before she was like “idk if I love Arendt, but I do know I’ll never love anyone like I loved Baler” and then literally the next and final chapter she goes from realizing she likes Arendt to confessing that she loves him. Like huh? I just don’t think it fits her characterization at all. I think how she expressed her emotions in ch 103 was a much better way to end this series. It could’ve gone something like “I know I’ll never be able to love anyone like I loved Baler. Regardless, time goes on and seasons change. And finally, what felt like a never ending winter throughout my 25 years of life is slowly but surely transitioning into spring. I can see its flowers when I spend time leisurely with people who I can be carefree around; I feel its warmth in every word Arendt utters to me; and I can sense its forthcoming peace after a tumultuous period. Though no one knows what the future holds, I can bravely face it knowing that you will be there by my side— the one who brought color in my dull world, and the one who brought spring to my life.”
SOMETHING LIKE THAT OMG LIKE A VAGUE BUT POSITIVE ENDING with the connotation that she will eventually be able to love Arendt, BUT NOT NOW LIKE WTFFFF. She def gives me major Katniss Everdeen vibes with regards to her emotions and selflessness. Katniss in the end, how she still has the nightmares and all yet Peeta is there to console her, is exactly the guiding theme the author should’ve used. Nevaeh will never be able to love the same, but she will learn to love everyday while also healing the sorrows of her past.
Lastly, I kind of love how morally gray all the characters are (with the exception of Marquise Solene ofc). Not sure if anyone has been hating on Baler, but Arendt literally did the same thing too… maybe for not as long, but his actions (though not fully to blame) did drive someone to their death. That being said, I lowwwkkkeeeyyyy wanted her to go back to Baler, but knew it would never work truly. It gives me major “The one that got away” by Katy Perry vibes. I just can’t even fathom like dedication 10+ years of your life to someone then walking away… that takes so much conviction. I just find it so bittersweet and regrettable. Another reason why I didn’t like the ending is because it leaves the impression that Nevaeh completely feels indifferent to Baler, when I also don’t think that fits her characterization. I believe a part of her will ALWAYS love Baler, but she chooses herself, and the best thing for her at the time was Arendt. Because of that, she would’ve eventually come to love Arendt. It would’ve been nice if it could’ve taken like another 10 years yk just for symmetry but poor Arendt would’ve needed the patience of a SAINT for that
I also don’t think they would have kids… While I do think she’s great with Rubiel, she never truly has to care for her for a prolongued period of time— it would get passed on to Ruidiger or the lady. I mean even if she were to have kids there’d be a nanny, but the main issue would be that she would not know how to raise a kid with affection. While I think a kid would heal Arendt, I don’t think it’d be the same for Nevaeh. Her healing lies in the small things we take for granted— idle chatter, a pretty yet common scene, and just zero drama lol.
Anyways that’s my whole essay. I’d rate this an 8/10 because I did find the story very interesting but was dissatisfied with mc’s ending.
