I think i might be reading too much into this but i think it is all part of JK plan to manipulate dan hence why is gave him a place to stay, feed him and pretends to care to gain more control over dan aka his property so, that in time dan would evenually accepts his role.

Lol I am not ! We later find out that he killed the previous king. Perhaps the main character couldn't take it anymore and seized the chance to eliminate the king. I'm also curious if he realizes that his uncle is doing the same thing to his orphan brother that the previous king did to him.
