At first I was like what are those annoying lines on their bodies, then I was like oh cool they're a fun little part of the plot, then I was pissed we never got to see what they turned out to be (╯°Д °)╯╧╧
I genuinely think this happened because he wants to self sabotage right now. Sometimes when you're this deep it just feels safer and easier to stay in the misery you're familiar with.
I know I have done this to myself a few times. Push men out of my life just to stay single and safe. It felt easier that way. Rather than let myself open up and feel pain... ┑(￣Д ￣)┍
