I think Mari lied cuz she just wanted her mom to react at all. She was already dealing with the guilt of Maru but her mom was also catatonic so I think she lied in hopes of her at least getting angry but when that didn't work she didn't know how to take it back (she looks about 9-10 in the flashback).
Can't believe ppl are STILL blaming the child who's going through unimaginable grief of losing a sibling, especially a baby sibling. Anyone with younger siblings knows how scary it is when they get hurt, let alone when one DIES. Between a mother who was catatonic from loss and a father who seems rather neglectful she's remarkably well adjusted in my eyes. Shes been able to apologize, know what she did was wrong, and still have the courage to try and make amends (which she does successfully mind you cuz her mom knows that there's no blame to be put on Mari.)
It's just baffling to me how a story primarily showcasing the struggles kids go through because of adults ppl still have the nerve to assume a child is somehow deserving of hate.
