I do think the saint is the ML... It says in chapter 4 that "Rumors swirled that he'd fled immediately before his execution, and became a bandit or found religion and converted"
If he became religious it can certainly explain the change in personality, and besides I feel like the looks match

Well, Louison <i>heard</i> of Carlton’s “death” in the original timeline. Carlton, being the resilient man he is, probably lived. We may even see him without an arm later since “hints” in the novel are written in neon red. He also had that pilgrim’s pass and it would be just like the author to be like “Yeah he had a pilgrim’s pass and also knows how to act like one, so he’s the saint” (re: Carlton telling Louison that his pilgrim act is good but that pilgrims usually speak “deferentially”).
I’m not even joking though, the author gives away almost everything whenever tension builds, to the point that we see the POV of the bad guys, the good guys, Louison, Carlton, and even the prince.
