I think they wanted more security in their relationship before they went to enlist. Every able Korean men had to go to military for a while, and it's well known that many couples break up because of that. Maybe they thought if they came out, it would bound them tighter and make it harder to break up, unlike secret relationship where no one knew about them. With barely any communication, they could've just drifted away and broken up. I admit they're quite reckless, but they were young and insecure, especially Wonwoo. It's just in his personality.
