I don't understand why the reason for which Sanji was standing between Zoro and Kuma has to be because he loves him romantically.
I mean, obviously he loves him, in a fraternal way (even if they disagree and fight all the time), because Zoro is NAKAMA.
And I think Sanji really thought that if he died it would be less harmful for the strawhats, because Zoro is the strongest (physically) and the protector of everyone (after Luffy). (Although that supposition was stupid, no one could survive without a cook who feeds them.) Plus, I think Sanji's personality is like that: he takes care and worries of people before himself, he's a giving and self-sacrificing person, that's why he felt so in debt with Zeff that he had abandoned his dream to find the All blue to, just pay him back, and that personality is part of the reason why he's a cook (appart his traumatic experience and his love for the art of cooking.)
Besides, I think Sanji had to stand between Zoro and Kuma simple because his pride was in danger. He had to make his own macho appearance, couldn't let Zoro be the only one to shine as a samurai.

Oh, and I also miss Pauly. He is so funny lol

I mean.It's just me and my screwed up brain make me think like that.

And I agree most of the reason why you don't understand it,sometimes I do know that 尾田荣一郎 make that happened only because the nakama thing.

Maybe I would have to say about the self-sacrificing part...I mean...Sanji do have that we know.But I just don't think he can do the whole "take mine not his" process I his mind for another man.It's just too much.too much for a ero cook.

Sometimes I just hoping..."hoping"...characters have their sexual orientation floated because I'm fujoshi I have to say.

But this is not like that...not at all...after Sanji's place might been pushed to a much higher place,things changes.

Things becomes much more intense.The weight beside Sanji's balances havebeen increase.the further it gose the harder I can get it.

I hope it's just my fujoshi brain.

Oh and I totally agree about the pride in danger part.to both of them.two of them are just bakas. ヽ(`Д´)ﾉ.BAKA and AHO.

Honestly, I undestand how you feel when you think there must be something deeper or romantic behind Sanji trying to sacrifice his life for Zoro.

The true is I'm also a fujoshi, I think. I just really love everything that tells love stories: yaoi, shounen ai, shojo, josei, romantic novels and romantic comedies (movies). I even like fanfics about Zoro x Sanji (mainly because they are my favorite characters in One Pice and I love when they are protagonists)

But before all that, I am a fan of One Piece, and in this manga, the true is: Sanji is a lady's man at heart, a pervert and a romantic in love with the idea love, and Zoro likes Tashigi (I don't think he's in love with her yet, I think he cares and feels attracted to her. And I like her too, she's clumsy, too serious, not as strong as others, but also sweet, honest, loyal, maternal and has a great sense of justice and helping people (why am I talking about Tash!?... sorry))

In my case, when I read One Piece, I'm often hoping the strawhats get along in the behind the scenes moments, in their daily life in the Sunny Go. I like reading stories about nakamaship because it melts my heart and makes me happy and I know they are family. I like to think Nami is not always yelling and punching people (but can be nice and plays with the others too), that Robin shares her books and teaches cool facts to the others (like about myths or legends), that Fanky and Ussop work together to make inventions, that Brook shows them his new songs once in a while, that Chopper lets people snuggle with him when it's cold (because his fur is warm), that Luffy hugs people randomly and also trains in the crownest (and everyone really, not just Zoro, since they have to be in shape to fight), that they tell each other their life stories and give each other advice, AND that Zoro and Sanji can get along and be friends, although they tend to disagree and fight a lot.

And even without all my delusions, I still think a nakama is a friend we love and admire. Plus, Sanji didin't try to sacrifice himself only for Zoro, but for all the strawhats and Luffy, just like Zoro did.
