imo the side ml isn't necessarily better, like we're only shown the good sides or the sides that pair well with the mc when it's the side ml, but with the main ml we have to see more sides or else it's just wrong because they would be too perfect.
generally, this is a lame tactic to create tension as you mentioned, like cheese in the trap does not......
