Owen might have recognized Nux as his mate from long ago and he was obsessed with him but Nux might not have ever responded to Owen. And Nux kept dying and Owen kept going to other timelines to meet Nux. Till the point Owen's interfere with the timelines caused Nux to be erased from those timelines
A lot of time passed and he couldn't find find Nux till this timeline. And in this timeline things were completely different. Nux was responding to him, looking back at him and interacting with him and Owen realized how in love he was and his body prepared to get pregnant
And Owen didn't go back to the past because he's afraid that if he messed with time again, Nux might get erased from existence once again

From what I understood, Owen always traveled to the same timeline until Nux seemed to have disappeared from that time line. The past was changing and thats why Owen didn't travel to another timeline and thats also why owen didn't travel to the past inmediatly after their daughter's birth. I think is because Owen is afraid Nux will completely desappear.
