I don't think he was too ashamed, he mentioned in one of the chapters (near the end of the contest) that he didn't want to use kitty in that way and he was scared of more people calling the cat a bad luck charm (like his parents do, and adoption centers did).

I think he clearly said that he doesn't want to use his cat as a mean to win the prize money, it'll be like taking advantage of a loved one or something hahah. And he didn't lie when he said he joined the competition for money cause it is indeed true he needed cash to care for the cat's medical attentions after all.
