me and my friend had a big conversation on yuwons and dohuns love and i wanted to share my perspective on what i think the underlying concept of “unchanged man” through the lens of love.
their relationship reminds me of hannibal and will graham from nbc’s show “hannibal”. essentially hannibal manipulates will into becoming his worst version of himself, the version he always tried to supress. as the story progresses, they both mutually hurt eachother but can’t help but come back together at the end of the day. both will and hannibal became the way that they were based on their circumstances and only they could understand eachother…oddly similar to yuwon and dohun.
both relationships hurt both people in it and outside of it, yet they continue to come together in union. that can’t be love, right?
i like to think about moral compasses in our everyday lives (or even self righteousness) particularly in love. we often have a very specific set way of how a relationship and love be, very black and white thinking in most cases. one has to be bad or good. but in reality, love does not have a universally agreed upon definition. is their love for one another (yuwon/dohuns) just pure obsession + selfish desire or is it genuine affection with the end goal being “i want this person by my side and happy?”. can we even apply morality standards in this case? what exactly makes their love so different? who are we to say what love is and what isn’t; what even is love?
i think it poses the question that i find myself wondering when reading this, what makes us good “sane” people? does intentions or actions carry more weight in your morality?
