One of my new faves to reread for fun. I know Xu Cinian went through sooo much shit in the main story but wow the family is just wholesome for me hahahahahaa. That's what makes it worth the reread. I just binged this in like 4 days and I def wish I could have a family as solid as the Xu/Qu clan. So supportive of each other even through ups and downs. Everyone with strengths and weaknesses. But so kuch love of different kinds all around. Also no matter how absurd, I love how their extended family just kept naturally growing and growing. Best couple forever will always be QuXu

I read a lot of the coments before starting and was curious.

After reading to the most recent chap, I have to say this is one of the more thought provoking and dynamic works I've seen in this genre. No good/bad characters, everyone making mistakes, not having a magical solution to everything, etc.

1) the intrusive thoughts from depression. Omg reading MC's train of thought might seem weird/random to an average person but it can be soooo relatable to someone depressive/anxious/suicidal. Esp in his particular situation.

2) Ive seen a lot of hate for the ML but my opinion so far is that he isn't perfect but he has done what he could (sometimes mistakenly) to get MC better. He fails, he partially succeeds, he fails again etc. It's a learning process for him, and his assholeness (part of his personality) was addressed appropriately for me to explain his past and current interactions. He is a product of a problematic family, and his first instinct was to make decsions based on that family's morals/values/system (aka fake marriage etc). The realization of how this was the wrong move doesnt come until much later, but it's realistic (imo) that he didnt see what was wrong at frist if thats the kind of situation he had been raised to expect (esp with his dad being that way). His latter decisions are much more aware and concsious, with input from doctors etc, and he appears to be more educated how to react to the MC's sudden tendencies and intrusive thoughts (a bit abrasive/blaming/manipulative in the beginning, to warm/accepting/patient later on). I guess the reason I like how ML is written so far, is that his experience kind of reflects how someone not familiar with depression might make it worse because they think they know how to help. But this also shows that they can learn more and adjust/adapt and be supportive in a way that can lead to actual improvement (not magical/instant/etc). It also shows how depression and suicidal tendencies affevt everyone, but is something that also can't just be blamed on anyone in particular.

3) Which leads us to the MC's mom - probably the most unlikeable in the story apart from the dad. The dad is a selfiah asshole, but i think the mom is worse because she paints herself as righteous. The dad is more just explicitly proud/greedy etc. He knows what he believes and is open about it. The mom, however, always has excuses/justifications for everything, and is very blatantly egotistical to the point of denial (different from the dad). I think that's what makes her worse. Also, i believe she is a good representation of the more conservative person who does not know how to deal with mental health as a problem, and makes decisions that are harmful. I love how she paints herslef as the good person in every aingle situation, but she actually causes more harm to her own son because of her egocentric beliefs. A lot of the co flict came from her choices. This is the most difficult aspect I can see here within the pov of someone depressive/anxious, because this is how parents/gtandparents/family members usually react in real life. My own mom still believes a depfessed person can just think happy thoughts and avoid being sad etc.

TLdr: liking thisnstory so far and actually rooting for ML
