It definitely looked like a plan. Since we get some insight into his mind after our MC came back to life, it seems more probable that he truly loved her and hated her at the same time. Dunno why that plan came to be, but it might’ve been for his revenge. Probably that since that’s the only thing he was thinking about from the beginning. It looks like the priestess, on the other hand, truly loved him and I think she was the one that killed the MCs son. She looks to have to most motive.
