I agree with most of the things you wrote but I think that a women can write an accurate bl manga, that person doesn't have to be gay to make the story accurate

I also thing it doesn t hurt- I mean come on- its just a drwing and not real people, real porn industrie with foce and stuff. help or hurt... why getting hurt? its just a story. why should somebody be hurt? I also dont feel hurt whn I read a book or watch a movie where women are discriminated. I just dont like the book/movie.

I don't think it's wrong that there's yaoi by and for women, though I've always been kind of curious about what would happen if there were more males involved and what kind of products would they produce. ( I'm talking about yaoi and shonen ai in general and not just bara, but deeper stories told by real men)

I think yaoi made me more accepting of the lgbtq community, but ofc I've demonstrating it the wrong way and I apologize for my dumb behaviour I've been that kind of gal who freaks when two gays kiss irl and that's just dumb, if they same thing happened to me it'd be awkward as fuck so I'll stop doing it. My gay friends support LGBT but they hate Bi's and shit on homophobes. But I still try to reach out to them and understand their reasons.

We know the boundaries between reality to fictional, but can't you just deal with it and let it go? In reality. Nobody is getting hurt by it. And people have their own phases to deal with.

ah, of course not! extreme fujoshis aren't the only one ruining / giving the gay community a bad rep, or at least some aspects of it. straight men do it with lesbian porn, and of course members of the community themselves play a role.

the reason why i believe yaoi hurts us is because, well, the oversexualization. there's been a long running stereotype that flamboyant gay men only care about sex, are sexual liberal, etc. it's not the most dominant or apparent stereotype, but it does exist. the oversexualization can also feed into these girls' & womens' delusions that yaoi is accurate or this is how real life queer relationships work.

also, not all of these overobsessive disgusting fujoshis are teenagers, there's a good few that are full grown adults. i respect ur opinion & viewpoint tho!!

in reality, a lot of straight women treat us like adorable puppies. for instance, you wouldn't really care all that much about a straight couple kissing or holding hands, but if a gay couple does it it's immediately "so cute", right? and it's great that you acknowledge your mistakes and are willing to improve!

so many women i've talked to about this issue are stubborn or set in their ways and aren't all that willing to change or maybe reconsider their viewpoint. it's just nice to see someone actually realizing their mistakes and wanting to change, lol

i mean, people can write whatever they want, right? so many people write serial killer stories but haven't killed a person. but it's easier in our heads to differentiate between that, but sexuality is more of a neutral zone imo. and also, a lot of people won't meet a serial killer in their lives, but it's normal to meet a gay person. if a woman writes inaccurately, people might mistake it as accurate so there might be some actual harm.

when i say "hurt", i mean like raising even more stigma. i don't mean actual physical or emotional hurt, but more of reputational hurt. ex, there's always been a stereotype about flamboyant gay men are really sexual in nature, right? it's not dominant or apparent, but it does exist. because of yaoi's oversexualization, girls might & have interpret this as real or accurate, so it lead to embarrassment or harassment of real life gay men. and it feeds into that stereotype even more.

Being bi myself I kinda understand where you are coming from (given I'm a woman). I belive most of the fujoshi stuff you describe are mainly young, at most adolescent, women. I don't think manga really hurt the community, in a way they help open up to the issue. The stereotypes are more on a social level. I think, even if the stories are extremely unrealistic, they opened up the chance to more lgbt representation in mainstream media ereasing a bit the stigma. (Not all countries are like usa and Europe) Also it's not such a weird phenomenon, hello world women like porn too!

Once the society starts viewing lgbt as normal then most of the bs will fade away.

i'm glad you can see where i'm coming from, or at least agree with a lot with what i had to say.

of course, again not all fujoshis are like this! i know that a lot of fujoshis are normal people that can differentiate between fiction & reality, but it's the impressionable ones that let what they read cloud their common sense & viewpoint that concern me. thanks for sharing!

In one aspect, I can totally see why it troubles you despite having almost never heard about people being affected by the fujoshi community so it's nice to hear other people's perspective on the topic. Obviously I understand that you've encountered some issues with fujoshi's who are delusional and stubborn and I totally get why you're annoyed. And I know you aren't addressing the whole community but I hope you know that there are quite a lot of respective fujoshi's who mind their own business and are aware of the clear boundary between homosexual relationships in real life and in yaoi/shounen ai. I understand that you believe that most of these girls are from a young age as it's easier for them to misinterpret things, but being fairly young myself, I generally don't believe that the creation of yaoi is harmful, it's just fictional stories made for entertainment, although I do believe that the main problem is the delusional members of this community who actually believe that these types of relationships exist, they should know that homosexual relationships are just like any other relationship in the real world rather than a cliche romantic. I hope you become more open to the idea of fujoshi's and I feel sorry that you have had to encounter people like that. Generally like anything else, there are pros and cons to the fujoshi community, you encounter issues of fetishes and the problem of women oversexualizing relationships but there are also women who have become more accepting and understanding towards the LGBT community through stories like these. jsksnsj i'm so sorry if it came off as "women liking porn is weird" or anything similar! that was not my intent at all, i know & understand that women can be sexual too, they can like porn too just as much as men can. but of course, it's oversexualization & letting stuff like that cloud your sense of self (if that's the right wording lol) that's an issue for me. women aren't the only ones, men are just as guilty. if not, even more.

i do feel that i was close minded & hmm, i guess i'd say rough towards fujoshis when i first started reading manga / manhwa. which is uncharacteristic for me, i'm usually a very open minded person. i have become more open & friendly to fujoshis! and of course i do, a lot of you are so friendly and nice to talk to.

every community has it's pros & cons, you're right. but it was quite interesting to hear how some people have actually become more open to lgbt+ because of yaoi / shounen ai. that has probably been the most fascinating thing.

while i don't exactly agree, i respect your opinion and i'm glad you replied to this question!

I don't really think there is anything wrong. There's a good and bad sides to it like all fandoms.
Considering it was a genre originally created by women for women in Japan. it's not an accurate representation and won't really be one since it is not the same genre as comics aimmed at LGBT+ community (bara or gei manga) and solely made for women and their delusions.
It is much like how yuri is drawned by men for men.

On that whole topic there was a discussion held long ago about this topic yaoi vs LGBT community in Japan called Yaoi Rondo (there's an english translation floating around)
Which held many interesting point and good for a further read on the subject.

Many fujoshi(also applying to yuri fans) know the difference but a lot of newer fans (some a little way too young to be reading and some are adults sadly) and smakl percentage are honestly disgusting and can't tell the difference between fiction and reality and are crazy with headcanon which just ruins it for the decent fans

Also cultural differences also plays into the topic i find (differences in behavior between Western vs Eastern creators and views)

I wouldn't say you're being close minded, obviously stereotypes derive from the truth, well not exactly 'the truth' but when there's a stereotype, it's sometimes because it's mostly true, or in this case, there are actually quite a lot of fujoshi's like that who sexualise rape, abuse and 'rough sex' between men which is honestly quite sad to see so I totally understand where you are coming from

I don't really see the stories having real life consequences, they are just often very dissatisfying to actual LGBT+ people because they dodge important plot points.

What happens when they tell their friends?
What happens when one is outed?
Might they loose their job or friends or family?
How do they cope when none of the straight boys they were friends with are willing to be near them?
How do they choose to define themselves once they've entered this relationship?
Why do virtually none of the characters actually experience any of the hardships of growing up gay or any of the troubles of bisexuality?

This is very frustrating for LGBT+ readers, so we can often imagine that this is some evil being done to us through fiction in the real world. It is just that the stories are cheap and commercial. This is an effect intrinsic to a capitalist economic model in a certain sex culture (and, yes, here my political agenda is clear)... so you can change that model or you can run around cleaning up the symptoms. Your choice.

In my opinion, you usually get more realistic portrayals of LGBTQ+ or romance in general in Josei or Seinen mangas. (they don't really have a proper genre for it really.) If you're looking at shounen-ai or yaoi for a deep good portrayal you're looking at the wrong place. Though you do see some good portrayals from time to time. Same for SOME shoujo and Shounen most of them are pretty unrealistic. From a fellow artist perspective, I know when an author is trying to make a deep conceptual story verse one who's just making a form of complete errored escapism built on fantasy. With no means of providing any moral lessons. Sometimes an artist/author isn't looking to make anything deep and that's fine.

But I am proud of those authors who do try and do deep research. And I try to give them the attention they deserve. Now in terms of the fans that are delusional, I agree they can be annoying I understand they're usually young and lack real-life experience sometimes but still. But I'd also like to thank you for not saying, everyone. You're the first person I see making this argument on this site with sense. I've seen people do it perfectly on youtube who are usually older. I usually assume the ones that go "ALL OF YOU ARE TRASH AHHH!" Are also on the younger side.

Not sure you're aware, but around the same time the yaoi was starting to be a genre ('70s), slash fiction was also gaining a lot of track in the western spaces (that's women writing mlm for women). There's been many dissertations and it's at least acknowledged that it's been influential for the lgbtqia+ community (not aware about the eastern side so thanks anon I will look into Yaoi Rondo).

I'm grey asexual and bi. Though I can't relate (and often weirded out) to the really-out-there rec requests I see on this site, I don't see a problem with women writing mlm that's mostly targeted for other women. It's a safe space where no one gets hurt (see this thread: https://twitter.com/celineorelse/status/1058145289561882627).

I'm more concerned with the young girls that consume BL that are obviously not targeted for them ().
