It's been hinted from the start, him describing the 'lil sister' that had the same qualities as the mc was him denying his romantic feelings and thinking that he only sees mc as a lil sis figure. They also had conversations that made him kind of ramble but he would stop himself because he's starting to realize things he didn't want to admit. The fortune teller confirms everything and he tried to brush it off as a joke but you can tell there was a frame where he seems taken aback by what she said. Him saying that he'd still serve her even if it's not something ML ordered was one of the moments where it seems like he's fully realized his feelings. The sparring match was his 'quiet last hurrah', he's fully aware of his feelings now but he knows ml and mc are in love so he chose to keep quiet just like the fortune teller predicted.
I like tht they addressed the power-balance issue, and gave the MC something to put her more on more equal footing (not tht she rlly needs it since he's so smitten tho lol)
