Ugh. Riftan is such a well written character. I understand his motives and I don’t think he’s a bad person. But GOD is it infuriating watching our poor Maxi do her best to speak for herself and he just shoots her down and holds her back. I hate him but at the same time I don’t. From his perspective he’s protecting a sheltered, weak woman from the cold harsh world he’s endured. hate that I can’t hate him completely because his intentions are so obviously from a place of love, albeit problematic.
agree. it's hard to completely hate him but i do dislike him when it comes to these situations
Right? His biggest problem isn't even his misconceptions about her, it's the fact that she's so obviously expressed the desire to improve and become stronger, but he doesn't allow her to. Like obviously she can't handle the difficult journey when all you've been doing is coddling her in a steel cage.
He also doesn't seem to be able to grasp the concept of someone weaker than him being worried about him. He could take a more gentle approach in reassuring her that he'll be safe, but instead he just gets mad as if she's in no position to care for his safety. He doesn't seem to get that even an 80 year old on their death bed would be concerned about someone they love going somewhere dangerous even if he's a giant dragon goblin slayer or whatever.
THEN AGAIN, I GET THAT IT'S BECAUSE HE GREW UP WITHOUT A FAMILY SOOOOOO....
