I never understand in these kinda stories why the mother and daughter don't just leave/ run away. They can either try getting a different job or even living on the streets might have been a better scenario, like either way they might not survive but it's better to live without getting beaten up.
This, if it’s so bad you can barely eat you’d literally still be better off taking your chances finding other servant work in the city, even begging would probably be better.
