Okay don’t get me wrong, I like Iseol and I know she’s supposed to be the “ quiet and mysterious” type but rn she just seems like a token female character that just happens to be there

Definitely, like I keep wondering where’s she at. She became a background character ╥﹏╥

No fr atleast give her more lines

    Dove May 3, 2024 11:33 am

No I'm pretty sure ppl were saying in previous comments that in the novel she's actually pretty nice but I'm not so sure on how true that is

    nogoodhero May 3, 2024 11:56 am

There’s an upcoming female disciple that will join them, and honestly iseol’s story is not focused on yet, but she does have a story of her own which will be revealed in the future. And I honestly think they’re limiting showing her getting beaten unlike in the novel. They’re probably being cautious if the manhwa were to get a bad rep if they often show her getting bruised and beaten, when in fact she often does in the novel. She’s got a cool female persona in the novel as well

Yeahhh, just a few chapters ago I was in the comments celebrating her also getting beat up here lol. They def only show her in the bg with those moments, and while I guess I can see their caution in showing violence from a man to a woman, I'd prefer her to get beat up more, just as the other disciplines. It's not fun to see her getting treated more delicately because of her gender. (At least the manhwa still gives the vibe that Chung Myung does treat them equally, the manhwa is the one with issues portraying that properly. At least that's the vibes I've gotten.)

She's an important character, you will know when the murim sect competition happens. It's so cool! She can even surpass Baek Cheon and Chung Myung said that she has the one who had the spirit of mount hua. That if he didn't come back to life and mount hua fell, she will never leave mount hua and die as a ghost of mount Hua. Her back story is... well, it's sad, you will know later

    arkray May 4, 2024 3:37 am

because we're still not in her part of backstory yet.

The backstory stuff not happening yet is also true, but it’s pretty clear imo that she’s being sort of glossed over which makes it clear smthing else is acc going on in these recent chapters. When a quiet and mysterious character is glossed over in scenes, it does feel like they aren’t there at all LOL, like the balance isn’t right imo.

Basically like others have said, korea (and especially certain platforms like n*ver) has certain restrictions on what can be shown. A woman getting beaten up by a man is often avoided in action manhwa bc of this. That’s why they often create a female antagonist for a female protagonist to fight, if she is ever allowed to be involved in fights at all. Guns and sword fights and power battles are more acceptable, and female characters are in that sense allowed to be involved in shoot-outs and sword battles with fancy powers against any character, but scenes of being punched with fists by a man are mostly censored.

The novel in this sense would have been more able to present her as an equal part of the group bc it wasn’t a visual depiction, but with these restrictions the manhwa can only ever have her in this weird, awkward position where she’s experiencing the same things (fist fights for training etc) but only in the background.

Female main characters in action fantasy manhwa are often relegated to the “hot girl love interest” position who don’t fight to the same extent as the male characters (if at all) and always look good, so this manhwa and a few others are the exception rather than the rule since she’s portrayed a character who is actually equal to the others. But the natural of the genre and restrictions for fight scenes don’t allow this to actually be shown in these latest chapters.

iirc it’s related to DV and also strict Korean age restrictions on what can be shown to who. But it’s important not to discount that it’s a more conservative country in a patriarchal society, so attitudes to women (and female characters by extension) are not gonna frequently be ‘she’s equal to us’ but AT BEST more like ‘she should be protected’.

This is so true, like it or not, koreans think of feminism or gender equality for that matter as STUPID, NONSENSE, DELUSIONAL. You can research more about their perspective on this.

You said everything I wanted to and more. I figured this was the case and am not surprised for the reasons, and like you said, this series and some others are definitely an exception to how women are portrayed in most action manhwa.

Seriously, my standards are so low that I'm happy to just see women being people and not sexualised in any way with their clothing, even if they're not fighting and thus not exactly on "equal ground" with the men. Ie. Heavenly Grand Archive's Young Master, although there it also makes sense due to the main character being an old man/grandpa character in reality. As a negative example, I currently have "Pick Me Up" on pause because I got annoyed with the differences in how the women and men dress. Men pretty much always covered up, women pretty much always showing boobs/exposed chest, waist, thighs... though the worst of it is having literally all the women wear high heels, even the one in actual plate armour. One or two could be okay as in "woo girlboss" but when it's all of the women, even the ones who have to move fast and climb trees etc, it's clearly nothing more than a turn-on or something for the creators.

I'm just hoping that we'll be getting more action series with female protagonists. I know they won't be the same as the ones with male protagonist, ie. they will very likely involve romance, which a lot of action readers seem to be against (though, that does make me ask if it's the romance itself they dislike or the quality of the romance being written that has caused them to dislike it). "I Stole The Number One Ranker's Soul" has been really enjoyable for me, and even if Son Moah isn't exactly independently OP, it's been nice to see her grow. I love my romance, but I'm glad it's more on the backburner in the series and not the main point of it. "The Housekeeper In The Dungeon" has been fun for it's different take on dungeons and the roles that could exist, and it gets so many points from me for allowing women with different body types to exist, many with large muscles (which is something I desperstely yearn more for in action series, especially when you look at what the men typically look like in them).

I ended up rambling a bit/continuing the topic to a slightly different one, haha. I know the reasons as to why things are as they are, but with growing global audiences I hope things will slowly start to change, even if it's only a pretense to get more sales (not necessarily, but y'know, capitalism for the win).

Personally, I think having romance in an action manhwa can really be 90/10. Regardless of gender.

90% of the time, it sucks, it feels forced and the plot can get side tracked to have more romantic scenes.

10% of the time, it's done really well but they might not get much traction because the romance is the side plot.

Having said that, I recommend "World's Greatest Estate Developer" the MC is as scammy as Chungmyeong and and SO MANY BEAUTIFUL BUFF PEOPLE. Seriously man or woman they didn't hesitate to buff them.

While it sucks that they can't show women get roughed up, I think we're personally one step closer with good stories like this one. It'll take a while but I feel like we'll eventually get there with equality for fictional people (lol) (and maybe see delicate men???)
