I'm disapointed that it is featured on best anime lists because pedophilic tropes like children vomiting and peeing themselves are so consistent even in the anime derailing "the plot" over and over again.
I talked to my friend about it a while ago, and I think to someone who is not aware of these issues the anime comes off as hardcore and dark instead of problematic af.

You didn't get that vibe while watching the show cuz they actually covered most of it up and cut out the nudity a lot. One of the very fiew times I'm happy that anime changed smth.
