tbh I read yaoi because I find that they have better plots than shoujo mangas. Shoujo mangas usually have the most cliche plots.

A lot of BL are targeted towards the FEMALE audience since many of the fantasies found in yaoi fetishize gay men. Some of them aren't particularly great in representing actual gay relationships. There are women in mangago who even want a dick just to see how a blowjob feels. Freud must be having a field day.

I started reading yaoi because I got sick and tired of the power dynamics in regular comics. Girls were weak, crued a lot, baggy, etc. I wanted a power woman but even those comics, whenever they met a man he somehow became the only thing that mattered. I read comics of all genres and not all are bad. Yaoi was able to give me love stories with mice smut that still had partner ships that weren't flawed because one was weaker. In fact I hardly ever read small ukes or yoais that have feminine rules, I'll read one with a feminine seme though. I'm honestly a little tired with yaoi right now too and shoujou has been better at drawing empowered women and I find myself reading that a lot more often. The only genre that I don't read on a regular daily basis would be shoujou AI or girl love. And those stories are also really amazing but as a straight female I think it's not as exciting as watching Males.

Yaoi isnt for everyone and people have a range of what and how much time they put into reading Yaoi. Im a fujoshi too, and I just read Yaoi, because I like them. Just like how I like reading Shoujo too.

At first I was a fan of shoujo manga (I still like it just not as much) and I read too many that I ran out and at that time my friends were fujoshis so I read a super cute shounen ai manga and liked the story and everything so yea thats how I became a fujoshi not because of the explicit yaoi stuff
