I know it's fiction, but the culture portrayed feels like a blend of Turkish, Arabic, and Indian cultures, which are very distinct from one another. It can be a bit jarring when a story combines different cultural elements without enough explanation or a clear reason within the world-building.
Well, it's definitely better than most straight manhwas that depict people of color as barbaric. This doesn't feel racist to me, but it is a bit stereotypical. It seems like the author took inspiration from different cultures and blended them together, though some aspects feel more like stereotypes than a deep understanding of those cultures.
For sure I think there's definitely a lot of racism in manwhas and mangas because there's unfortunately a lot of racism and ignorance in Japan and Korea but I don't think bwat was looking for a specific culture because it isn't a specific country they're trying to embody, just taking shallow inspiration from lots of different cultures which I don't really see as an issue. There's no harm in it and the intention is just from finding beauty in the culture of those countries and wanting to come up with something similar but not the same for a fantasy
So I started reading this yesterday cuz it have a really high rating and I liked it a lot that is until...
Tell me why is our fmc a slave owner
Like is it gonna change or am I overthinking it
No but why is she using that guy for her own selfish reasons
I mean sure he ain't a saint but why does this give grooming vibes or am I really just overthinking it
Definitely not grooming! They’re the same in age if not mistaken? But definitely a desperate attempt to save her own life selfishly through manipulation. Of all male leads, Eckles is the easiest she can access and build up favourability with. To her this world is unfair and just a game out to get her. If you think about it, she was involuntarily brought into a game into its hardest mode where everyone close to her automatically hates her to the max. Eckles is like a blank slate she could build points up fast without previous prejudice. Also, although you are right for questioning her morals, I personally found it really refreshing to have a female lead actually react realistically in a reasonable way. Unlike most other villainess manhwas that have the girl running to the male leads like nothing ever happened, or where the manhwa picks up almost a comedy tone when the introduced past was full of grief! For its time of release, there was one to none serious mc!
Well, as long as her actions aren't glorified, I guess it's fine. It doesn't justify what she did, but I can understand why she did it. Still, I don't feel bad for her about how the whole Eckles situation ended because it was a consequence of her own actions.
Oh, and I just wanted to add that grooming can happen to anyone, regardless of their age or gender. Grooming is a form of manipulation where someone gradually builds trust, emotional dependence, or a sense of obligation in order to exploit, control, or abuse another person. While it is often associated with children, adults can also be groomed, and anyone can become vulnerable under certain circumstances.
Here's the link to the novel in case anyone wants to read it https://www.novelupdates.com/series/unbeknownst-to-me-i-am-secretly-dating-the-emperor/
I have already read the novel and it's one of my favorites.
I fell in love with the world-building. The constant sense of danger kept the story engaging and the horror elements were done really well like not just for shock value but to create tension and atmosphere that actually supports the story.
I also really loved the relationships in the story. The dynamic between the main lead and his team is one of the highlights for me. Their trust teamwork and emotional bonds make the story so much more wholesome. I especially enjoyed the friendship between the characters
Overall it’s a story that blends horror, fantasy, and emotional connections really well. I’d definitely recommend it to people who enjoy strong world-building survival settings and character-driven relationships.
Exactly with the worldbuilding! I absolutely adored all the horror elements they put into the Abyss like you could tell they put all their passion in creating all those creatures (and the team lol)
What I’m looking forward to in the manhwa are all these creatures and places illustrated; I trust in the artist to deliver (๑•ㅂ•)و✧
This used to be my favorite manhwa but that changed after I started reading the novel cuz the novel is sooo much better
Also the manhwa yoojin is kinda different then the novel yoojin
In manhwa he is more loud and comedic while in the novel he is more sassy and I absolutely love his inner monologue in the novel
Also the novel have sooo much bromance that you might as well call it romance
Ya guys yoojin and hyunjay are married believe me. They even have a child together
Girl you should absolutely read the novel
I wasn't bored for a single minute
It's not been long since I started reading web novels and I was hesitant at first cuz it's kinda long(800 plus chapters) but after reading it I am upset that there aren't more chapters
I mean there's the side stories but those aren't translated on the website I am reading on.
Seriously though give it a try and you won't be disappointed
About the bromance
Hyunjay literally calls yoojin his life, need I say more?
