Nobody likes to see another in pain due to them, so phil feels guilty for causing eustis pain. But it is literally 100% the consequences of his actions, she didn't do anything to hurt him. Eustis grew fond of phil because she was actively working to be likeable, instead of being a regular kid. Eustis was happy not having to feel guilt about her mistreatment. He never parented her though, he never apologised for his words. For him, he grew fond of phil because of how she served him in getting over his grief. It was never about how he should be a good parent to her. And only now is he realising that all of this cost him his only family.
I'm hoping that in the mage tower phil can actually make a family of these lone wolves. They all stayed with her for so long to help her overcome her adversities, and now seems like a great time for her to show them love and acceptance, so they can grow into a family of misfits.

damn. I love that the 2 of them are here, but i wish it could've been abigail using her power to decapitate that weasel threatening her daughter. Would've gone much harder, especially with the feminist roots of the story, for there to not be a man coming to the rescue. Still, seems like they're trying to make it more of a wholesome family story, so i guess its fine
this is such a gem, no 2-dimensional characters. The FL is amazing, such a badass. She recovered so well, from being willingly suicidal to achieve her goals, to being clever and planning to stay alive no matter what, and pulling up the ML along with her
i love that the fl was open and vulnerable, about how her past experience made her hide things. And she wasn't oblivious about why he was angry, she knew she looked bad here. I hope the repressed bf can hear all of this and realise his unwillingness to question, or set boundaries with others as her bf, was being perceived as his indifference to the FL
