it’s because of how he was punished as a child, he would get locked in a room or closet and could only come out when his punishment time was finished and he would get into more trouble and the punishment extended if he left before he was told the punishment was over and that he was allowed to leave. He has a very weird and sometimes overly literal way of thinking and can’t understand emotions because he is a genuine diagnosed psychopath, so he thinks that it’s better to keep this boy company so he doesn’t get lonely until his punishment is over rather than get the boy into more trouble by letting him out before the punishment is over, because that’s what happened in his childhood, the thing he disliked most about when he would get locked in a room or closet as punishment as a child was how lonely and bored he would get while he was waiting for it to be over. I’ve read the novel and there are lots of red flags about his childhood
