i don’t think it’s more than ten years. they made the blondie an adult so they could still explore the teacher x student taboo without making it adult x minor but i would still say the power dynamics make the situation definitely very icky. it’s not the worse but i do turn my brain off every time they emphasize the teacher x student thing. honestly don’t understand why they couldn’t just make the blonde a college student if they were gonna make him a student.

the way people have talked about this story has given it so much injustice. especially ruans character. i went into this blind assuming the worst cause i thought he’d be a mindless toxic twink, but he genuinely had so much fucked up issues happening in his life that he developed a habit of seeking some form of control in his life and mental illness since he never was given the chance to do anything for himself, especially finding solace with colden who was the first person in his life to ever give him any sort of freedom.
now, was ruan a piece of shit for what he did to coldan? yes. but was that his intent? NO!! colden literally explores this with his own character, he doesn’t forgive him, he doesn’t let ruan forget what he did to him, showing him how miserable he is by all these sudden changes and coming back into your best friends life in such a traumatic way. ruan is so emotionally and socially stunted he couldn’t even process what colden was feeling, and cue the fucking control habit again, never left his sight.
i think at the end of the day, the parents need to get the lashings the most.

This story would be smooth sailing if not for the adults in Ruan’s life. His parents never bothered to understand or get to know him, and just pushed everything onto Herdic. They let Shein get away with slacking off and force his role onto their young child. It’s clear that Shein is not that ill and it’s strange that the parents (who are pretty sharp) seemingly never picked up on it.
Despite knowing how his laziness forced Ruan to give up his childhood, at no point does Shein show so much as a shred of concern for Ruan even when he is genuinely distressed.
They see him as an heir, not a child or brother. Their only concern is that he performs his role without inconveniencing them. Herdic also ends up like this, because he concealed all of Cloden’s letters to “avoid distracting” Ruan. It was so unnecessary, and would have allowed them to stay connected.
Later on, the count absolutely knew what would happen when Ruan started his search and how much it was going to hurt him, but he let it happen anyway to teach him a lesson and change his mind. Again, he prioritized “teaching” his heir how to wield authority and breaking him of his first love over his actual well being.
It’s still his fault for snapping, but there were so many opportunities for everyone around him to have unknowingly prevented it if they had actually prioritized him as a person instead of trying to manipulate him into the path/behavior they wanted.
genuinely, ruan had no proper support in his life. everyone has failed in in every aspect of the story, which led to his own demise of being blinded by anger and not having any proper outlet of exploring his emotions.
it’s clear ruan has more of stronger moral compass than his brother and father, who seem witty and avoidant of problems, and everytime ruan had enforced any force or what he did to coldan, even he was taken aback by his actions in some way. which is why i believe he’s not a horrible person, just had to be witnessed by coldan using the worst version of him. a version that was used, misguided, and lied to. i mean cmon, why the hell are ether lying to him about his lover?? the WHOLE DAMN TOWN? yall lost your minds.
what you mentioned about herold did also pissed me off sideways, cause i really wanted to like his character, but he ended up following the rauns dads ideology’s and ended up making things harder for the two lovers by blocking the others form of contact off!!
and he seemed to care in some sort of level about those boys, what was the issue? i think if ruan ended up getting those letters, he wouldn’t have fully forgotten colden.
