basically, bear bile is used in certain traditional medicine, so there's farms in korea to harvest it (without killing the bears now, but they live in horrible conditions). there's a lot of humanitarian groups that made an agreement w bear farms to let ppl feed them and clean their cages in turn for not trying to free them, so i think the mc used to volunteer w one of these groups (?). last i heard korea is trying to put a total end to it, but it's still ongoing :(
