When Chase had his first rut there was no one to spend it with, and Grayson who was present paniced and brought his dog Alex as a last resort. But Chase passed out before anything could happen, and they used an injection to get rid of his pheromones. Grayson after that joked about it, and since Chase remembered a dog being present but not much else, it became a possiblity for him that it really could have happened -> dog trauma. And no one told him the truth.
Grayson later use it to scare him, to get him to the pheromones parties, where they got rid of Chase's pheromones by injection, since Chase was not willing to get rid of his pheromones in any other way on his own.
To actually understand the situation, you need to know that pheromone accumulation is like poisoning, it can case memory loss and if it continues damages the brain, so they need to get rid of them. And since the father suffered from brain damage, only stable because of the pheromones of his partner, but lost feeling emotions, it's a serious issue in that family. ( Ashley as a teenager and years later Ashley as a father, it's sad what those pheromones did to him).
And Grayson being born manifested makes him a bit crazier than other dominant alphas. He has his own logic, and since he has problems understanding emotions, he goes by that logic.
