The second time reading this did help with the confusion I felt the first time, but I do get why everyone is confused and feels like there's parts missing. I think it's just an issue of not a lot of internal dialogue and the miscommunication trope being a big thing in this so because we don't see very often how they think, especially the black haired guy, that everything seemed really weird.
