Read this years ago before the anime came out and it was such an unforgettable experience. I just finished binge watching the anime last night and they did such an amazing job at animating the action scenes and the character art is chef’s kiss. I couldn’t get enough and brimming with post watch excitement, I find myself back here. I honestly cannot wait for the next season of the anime to come out.
There seems to be lots of hate going around after the anime came out, tho. I have to admit that story and plot writing wise, this manhwa isn’t the best written one out there. In terms of action and power dynamics tho, I think this story did a good job. I’ve also seen a lot of hate going about the romance aspect. As an avid romance genre fan, I do admit that this story didn’t really portray it well. I also see lots of preference for Johee instead of Hae-in as the romantic interest, but from my personal perspective, although Johee would’ve made more sense as a prospective partner because of her history with the E-rank and outcast Sung Jinwoo. But as the saying, “with great power comes great responsibilities” goes, I don’t think Johee would’ve handled Jinwoo’s sudden change well. This is considering she doesn’t handle pressure well during hunter missions and is usually left with a traumatic experience. If she had gotten together with Jinwoo, it would’ve only lasted a short while before the whole S-class hunter responsibilities and Shadow Monarch/Higher Being circumstances drove them apart. I think going with Cha Hae-in as Jinwoo’s romantic partner was a better choice. Being an S-class hunter herself, Hae-in is able to stand her ground with or without Jinwoo having to constantly worry about her wellbeing during fights. She has the ability and the chance to catch up to Jinwoo’s rapid character growth. The manhwa just did not write or portray it well in the story, which I’m willing to overlook as romance isn’t the main focus of the story. I’m usually a big fan of romance, but this is one of the rare instances that I think the story would’ve been fine without the whole romance thing added.
I’ve also seen a lot of topics regarding how one dimensional Jinwoo’s character is. How he’s quite the boring, stoic, and unexpressive character. I think the system has a big influence on that matter. I don’t remember which episode from the anime nor chapter from the manhwa, but Jinwoo expressed one time how he could feel some of his emotions suddenly dying out or disappearing. Which I think explains how he’s gotten more indifferent about things. Some people also don’t like how he’s so overpowered, while personally I dig it so much. It is just so cool seeing Jinwoo constantly powering up and expanding his shadow army.
The whole time rift thing threw me off tho, and I will always mourn Jinwoo’s past connection with his peers before the reset. I do like how he was able to rebuild his life and was able to connect with the same people he cares about in the present timeline, but it’s just sad that it doesn’t feel the same as before. However, I will never say no to a happy ending, so I’m okay with how the story went and ended lol. I cannot wait to see more of Igris and Beru, as well as the other shadow generals being animated! It’ll be so much fun (๑•ㅂ•)و✧
