For those who don’t know in the edo period homosexuality was common among the samurai, the wakashū, also known as "the third gender" was a term that applied to young boy/young men who were taken as sexual partners of some adult samurai, it was a preference that at first, before taking western customs, was nothing special in japan. As I said before, taking a wakushū as a lover was a preference but this didn’t determine the sexual orientation of men in Japan, they could be "straight" —as we call it—, and still take a wakushū as a lover, and then, after this “momentary period of his life” the wakushū could also grow and get married to a woman, or always like women if that was their primordial preference. They were not define for who they have sex with, but their desires from the heart.

But even if that sounds kinda appropriate I can only said that it was not, being a wakushū at the time had a lot of demands and very serious problems according to some investigation.
