It's the lighting. He's often only lit by candles.
I don’t believe that’s the lighting… even in the cover he seems so much whiter than before.

The cover has a harsh light in front of their faces. You can tell based off how little shadows there are and how the shadows are all in the background on his back, indicating the light is in front and shining brightly to cause minimum shadows.
There are moments where he looks a little lighter, but most of those are depending on the light set up.
Adding on bc I went to check the cover again, we can tell that's a very bright light bc our MC has absolutely no shadows on his face and most of his body. And our ML has most of the shadows on his back just bc of how the MCs head leaning over ML is the thing giving him a shadow on his back.
It's giving the illusion of a bright flashlight pointed at them.

I am NOT defending white washing holy shit?? I am just pointing out how in art and when drawing/painting lighting, it can "change" skin tones to look lighter. This is just skin color in art 101.
It would be warmer if the light is warmer.
But depending on the closeness of the light source (closer the brighter/more candles the brighter) and the type of light source itself can affect how the light reflects on skin.
Also, who knows how many candles are real and which are fake bright ones. Cuz surely they aren't using this many candles. But that's just a personal head canon it'd be funny they used fake to avoid replacing candles every day.
We also can compare our MCs in the cover, bc he looks Very bright. But if you look at where his arm sits over our MLs you can see their skin tones are different. He is still very tan in comparison to our MC which we do know.
Also the quality of the cover is a little low too, so the coloring of it might be off in general.
